About

Shotbox is a screenshot tool for macOS that also builds a search index of everything you capture. When you take a shot, it reads the text in the image on your Mac, gives the shot a title and saves it, so a few days later you can type a word you remember and get the original back, together with the extracted text and the app it came from.

Recognition uses an open-source OCR model bundled with the app, so it runs offline and no screenshot or its text leaves your machine. There is no account and no cloud. Shotbox only reads your images to build the index and never modifies or deletes them. Codes, amounts, order numbers and URLs found in a shot are pulled out as one-tap copy fields.

For capture itself, version 0.10 adds a frozen-screen area selector with a pixel magnifier and color value, window capture by hover, a Capture Text shortcut that sends the text of a region straight to the clipboard, a thumbnail card after each shot that you can drag into any app, an annotation editor with 13 tools plus background styling, and pinned screenshots that float on screen.

It runs on macOS 13 or later, on Apple Silicon and Intel, is notarized by Apple and updates itself. It is free and labeled beta. The app sends anonymous usage statistics only, never screenshots or content, and you can switch them off in Settings.
