About

Semi Design is a design system designed, developed and maintained by Douyin’s frontend team and MED product design team. It is a comprehensive, easy-to-use, high-quality modern enterprise application UI solution, refined from complex scenarios across ByteDance’s business lines, supporting nearly 1,000 platform products and serving over 100,000 internal and external users.

Our Vision Semi is often used as a prefix or in compound terms to mean "half" — just as a complete enterprise application consists of business logic and frontend interfaces, Semi Design aims to be this indispensable half, providing a solid, high-quality foundation for enterprise application frontends.

We believe the true value of a design system lies in cutting frontend development costs, while delivering top-tier design and engineering standards, fully unlocking the productivity of designers and developers, and continuously incubating star products.

Design: The Constant and the Variable In recent years, a growing number of SaaS products including Slack, Notion and Figma have driven growth through exceptional user experience. Product evaluation criteria have gradually shifted from procurement teams to end users; a product’s experience quality directly impacts whether users continue to use it, making experience design for business-facing (B-end) products more important than ever.

Semi Design is always committed to elevating enterprise application experience. By refining a clean, lightweight, modern design style, meticulously polishing atomic component interactions, and iterating across ByteDance’s massive business scenarios, we have built a set of high-quality default foundations. This ensures enterprise applications built with Semi have inherently consistent "language" and a quality baseline far superior to outdated systems.

What’s more, a great design system must be "alive" — it needs to grow and update alongside business expansion. That’s why Semi never tries to constrain users or rigidify so-called "unified standards". Instead, we fully decouple modules on top of the default foundation and open up extensive customization capabilities, allowing users to make secondary adjustments and customizations to build frontend assets suited for products of all types.
