Filewise

Rename and file your Downloads by what is inside them

About

Filewise is a menu-bar Mac app that reads what is inside the files you download or scan and proposes a clear name and a folder for each one. Invoices, signed contracts, reports, screenshots and scanned pages arrive in Downloads or on the Desktop as IMG_4821 and download (3).pdf; Filewise turns them into names built from date, who, type and topic.

It reads PDFs, Office files and plain text directly, and uses Apple Vision OCR for screenshots and scans, in Chinese and English. Reading, naming and learning all run on your Mac, and file contents are never uploaded. On first launch it downloads a local language model of about 2 GB once, or uses the system model on Macs with Apple Intelligence, or Ollama if you have it installed.

The rules are strict. Filewise only renames and moves, and never deletes. It shows a plan first, old name to new name with the reason, and nothing happens until you confirm. When it cannot read a file, it keeps the original name instead of inventing one. Every change goes into an undo log, so one click rolls it back.

Compared with rule-based tools such as Hazel, you write no rules; compared with Finder smart folders, it reads the content instead of only date, type and size.

It runs on macOS 14 or later on Apple Silicon only. The installer is about 2.6 MB, Developer ID signed and notarized, and the app updates itself. It is free to download during the beta.
